Overview
Forty dancers, three film units.
A feature film needed its nightclub and street sequences to feel inhabited, not staged. We street-cast forty movers, trained them in the film’s movement language, and ran them across three units over nine shoot days.
The Challenge
Background that behaves like foreground.
The camera roams through the crowd in long takes, which means every background mover is effectively a principal. One self-conscious extra in focus pulls the whole shot apart — and reshoots cost the production its nights.
Our Approach
Give everyone a secret.
Each mover got a private objective for every setup — who they want, what they hide — so the crowd reads as forty small stories instead of one big crowd scene. The director could point the camera anywhere and find life.
Deliverables
What the production kept.
- Forty trained movers with continuity cover.
- Choreographed sequences for five setups.
- On-set movement direction across nine days.
Outcome
Nine nights, no reshoots.
Every movement setup wrapped on schedule, and two of the street-cast movers were promoted to featured roles during the shoot. The studio kept the collective on call for its next production.
