Lead performer portrait from the Velvet Hour Sessions

Overview

A stage drama cast in eleven days.

A new writing company needed twelve performers who could carry an intimate two-act drama — most of them unknowns. We ran open calls, filtered four hundred tapes to forty rooms, and built an ensemble with genuine chemistry instead of twelve separate hires.

The Challenge

Chemistry cannot be cast from headshots.

The script lived or died on ensemble trust — strangers playing a family across twenty years. Paper shortlists kept producing strong individuals who went flat the moment they shared a scene.

Our Approach

Pair every finalist before finals.

We workshopped forty actors in rotating pairs for a full weekend before any solo final. Directors watched relationships form in real time, and the final twelve had already played together before contracts were signed.

Deliverables

What the production kept.

  • Twelve contracted performers, understudies included.
  • Recorded chemistry reads for every pairing.
  • Rehearsal-ready character notes for the director.

Outcome

Sold out before press night.

The run extended twice on word of mouth, and four of the twelve booked screen work directly from the show’s recorded archive. The company now casts every production through the collective.
